Objective
Certain property insurance policies specifically cover the perils of theft, robbery, burglary or other criminal offences such as cyber crimes. Unfortunately, many of such policies do not go on to define such terms. In practice, whenever a claim arises under any one of such policies and a disagreement emerges between the insurer and the claimant over the meanings of such terms, the claims handler will refer to their meanings in the criminal law. This practice is not without difficulty as their legal meanings are rather different from what ordinary people would perceive them to be.
After the course, the participants should understand the statutory meanings of theft, robbery, burglary and some other offences, which are insured perils of property insurance policies.
